LESSONS IN POVERTY
By: Connie YostOn two Saturday mornings: November 19, and December 3, from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm, “LESSONS IN POVERTY” will be presented at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1625 NE Hancock. Rev. Connie Yost, Affiliated Community Minister with First Unitarian Church says, “We will come to understand that poverty is systemic, rooted in economics, politics, and discrimination. In addition, we will explore evidence to show that poverty, far from being random, disproportionately affects Americans who have traditionally experienced oppression—African Americans, Latinos, immigrants, women and children. We will explore the factors that lead to and perpetuate poverty.
“Finally, we will learn what the face of poverty looks like in our local community, and what we can do to reduce it. The holidays are a busy time and yet, it is also a time where we often stop to notice those around us who are struggling and wonder what we can do to help “Please prioritize this opportunity to learn, share, build community and explore how we can make a long term difference in the lives of our neighbors.” For more information, or to reserve a space, please contact Kathryn Moran, at community@westprespdx.org or 503 888-1333.
